University? The right choice?

As of Thursday 8th May 2019, I had finished university. After 4 long, yet short, years, it was over. But, was it the right choice?

4 years ago, when A Levels were coming to an end, the only option I saw was university. It was drilled into me as a kid that I have to get my degree. I didn’t know there were other options. All I knew was university.

I’ve now got my degree, but do I wish I done something else? Well kinda…

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when I was 18, so I chose the course Criminology with Psychology. But during my first year I quickly realised that I HATED it. So I changed my course and done Media Production instead. I am a creative person so this was better fit. But still, I don’t feel like I needed to go to university.

With a media career, there’s so many options which I didn’t know what one I wanted. But now I do, and maybe my degree wasn’t the right choice.

I feel that maybe an apprenticeship route might have been more suited. You can earn money while learning and almost certainly have a guaranteed job once the apprenticeship is over. You gain more hands on experience therefore learn more practical basics of what a workplace is like, unlike university where you’re in a bubble of education. But I’ve got my degree now so I just have to find the right path that I want to go down from here on.

So… is university right for you? That’s something I can’t tell you. It’s a choice you have to make. One thing I can tell you is that you should consider your other options first. You don’t have to get a degree to be successful. There’s many other paths you can choose.

In other words, if you don’t feel like you want to go to university, then don’t worry about it, there’s other options that will be better fit for what you want to do.

I can say, if you force yourself to go to university even if you hate the idea, you will probably struggle a lot as it’s completely different to what school is like.

My advice, look at all your options, you may find something else you want to do, or you may find that university is what you want to do. But whatever your choice, make sure it’s your decision and it’s what will make you happy.
